Beyond the Golden Triangle in India

India’s best-known circuit is only the opening chapter. The right extension should deepen the story—through fortress cities, temple landscapes, river towns and living craft—without turning the journey into a chain of one-night stops.

Abhaneri · RajasthanA route should add depth, not merely distance.

A deeper route should feel inevitable.

“Offbeat” is valuable only when the road, the hotel and the time on the ground still make sense.

Smaller towns change the scale of a journey. A fort may be quieter, a market more personal and a heritage stay more connected to the place around it. But a famous name alone does not justify another long drive.

We first decide what the extension is meant to add—temple art, rural Rajasthan, living craft, a river landscape or wildlife—then build one regional sequence with enough time to experience it properly.

02 · Route chapters

Four coherent ways to go deeper

These are route ideas, not fixed packages. Each follows geography and journey rhythm rather than collecting unrelated “hidden gems”.

Chanderi Maheshwar Indore

Textile traditions, hilltop forts and the Narmada riverfront form a distinct Central India journey best planned as its own chapter.

Textiles · Living heritage · Slow travel
Natural next step
Bhopal or Mumbai

03 · The places

Eight towns. Eight different reasons to go.

The best choice is not the least known town. It is the place that adds the right chapter to your route.

01

Gateway fortress

Gwalior

A commanding fort, musical legacy and the most logical bridge from Agra into the quieter heart of Central India.

1–2 nights
02

Riverside heritage

Orchha

Palaces, temples and cenotaphs at a human scale—best experienced after the day visitors have gone.

2 nights
03

Temple landscape

Khajuraho

Exceptional Chandela architecture whose artistic and spiritual context deserves more than a rushed monument stop.

1–2 nights
04

Palace town

Karauli

A lived-in Rajasthan chapter of palace courtyards, nearby villages and a gentler transition between Agra and Jaipur.

1–2 nights
05

Painted old town

Bundi

Stepwells, murals and a compact historic quarter that rewards walking rather than a checklist of monuments.

2 nights
06

Fresco country

Mandawa

A gateway to Shekhawati’s painted havelis, strongest when combined with a knowledgeable guide and a characterful stay.

1–2 nights
07

Narmada river town

Maheshwar

Stone ghats, handloom traditions and an unhurried river rhythm that works as a destination, not merely an overnight.

2 nights
08

Fort and textiles

Chanderi

A small fortified town known for weaving, architecture and a landscape that feels far removed from India’s major circuits.

1–2 nights

04 · Choose by intention

What do you want the extension to change?

A good extension alters the character of the journey. It should not simply add more monuments.
For a first journey with more depth

Gwalior · Orchha · Khajuraho

Add architecture and temple art while keeping a clear eastward route.

Allow 4–5 nights
For rural Rajasthan and wildlife

Karauli · Ranthambore · Bundi

Balance palace towns, village life and safari time without returning repeatedly to the same gateway.

Allow 4–6 nights
For frescoes and photography

Mandawa · Shekhawati

Use the painted towns as a short prelude between Delhi and Jaipur, not as an isolated detour.

Allow 2–3 nights
For craft and slower travel

Chanderi · Maheshwar

Build a separate Central India chapter around weaving, river life and smaller heritage properties.

Allow 4–5 nights
Arrival at a heritage palace hotel in India

05 · The stay matters

A smaller town is only as strong as the night you spend there.

Heritage character should never excuse weak operations. We assess room condition, management, food, access, service reliability and whether the property lets you experience the town at its best hour.

  • 01Choose location before prestige.
  • 02Protect two-night stays where the place deserves them.
  • 03Plan arrival time as carefully as the road itself.

06 · Journeys that already go deeper

Start with a route that has purpose.

Every dossier is a starting point. Dates, hotels, pace and the balance between monuments and lived experience are refined privately.

Field note · Sulabh Jain

“A lesser-known town should earn its place in the route. I look at the road, the hotel, the time of arrival and what the guest can actually experience after the main monument closes.”
